About the Program
College: University College
Credits: 18 | One required core course (3 s.h.) + five additional courses (15 s.h.) from an approved list.
Requirements: All courses must be completed with a minimum 2.00 GPA
Eligibility: Open to current UI undergraduates in any major.
Coursework
The 18-semester-hour certificate combines a required introductory course (Artificial Intelligence Fundamentals) with a flexible set of five electives drawn from multiple disciplines. These courses will help you develop the knowledge, skills, and critical thinking needed to apply AI responsibly in your field.
You'll get hands-on with today's AI tools, then take them wherever your curiosity leads. Consider the intersection and implications of AI within the arts. Examine how AI is reshaping business, media, and American politics. Dig into the law and ethics of emerging technology, or explore the big questions of minds and machines. Discover how AI is transforming influencers and digital games, human voice technologies, language work, and live performance.
Whatever your major, you'll find courses that connect AI to the work you care about. Many were designed by Provost AI Fellows specifically for this certificate, and new options are added regularly.

Current Undergraduate Students
Add the Certificate in Artificial Intelligence to your Programs of Study in MyUI:
- Navigate to the Programs of Study and Advisor page in MyUI
- Go to the Add a Certificate drop-down menu
- Find Artificial Intelligence CER – UC
- Click the Add Certificate button
Non-Degree Students
If you are not enrolled in a degree program at the University of Iowa and would like to only pursue the Certificate in Artificial Intelligence:
- Apply for Admission as a Non-Degree Student
- There is a $55 application fee. Students will need to send a transcript for any undergraduate college credit they have earned.
- When prompted in the application (Section B. Admission Info), enter the following information:

- To which undergraduate college of the University are you applying?: University College
