Submit a proposal for My Favorite Assignment for an AI World, a showcase session at the AI in Teaching and Learning Summit, which will be held January 29, 2027, at the Iowa Memorial Union.
In this format, each presenter will have five minutes to highlight a favorite assignment, activity, project, or assessment that has been intentionally designed or redesigned for teaching and learning in a world where AI tools are increasingly available to students. A projector and screen will be provided.
Assignments might:
- Develop informed understanding by helping students evaluate AI tools and outputs, recognize their limitations, or explore their broader ethical, social, disciplinary, or professional implications.
- Integrate AI purposefully by using AI to support learning, creativity, feedback, practice, analysis, or career preparation, or by redesigning assignments to encourage responsible use and make student learning more visible.
- Build independent mastery by helping students develop foundational knowledge, disciplinary skills, judgment, or problem-solving abilities without over-relying on AI assistance.
Assignments of all kinds are appropriate for this session, whether they span an entire semester or take just a few minutes. Some may rely heavily on AI tools, while others intentionally limit their use. Assignments could come from an undergraduate or graduate-level course. What they all share is a thoughtful response to the opportunities and challenges of teaching in an AI world.
What makes a strong proposal?
This session is designed to inspire participants with concrete, adaptable strategies they can bring back to their own courses. Summit participants teach in a variety of disciplines and contexts, so presenters should orient their content to an interdisciplinary audience of varying technical levels and abilities.
In a 250-word abstract, please ensure that:
- The assignment is clearly described. Although the brevity of this format will limit the ability to share every detail, attendees should leave with a practical understanding of what students do and how the activity unfolds.
- The connection to AI is meaningful. Explain how the assignment responds to the realities of teaching and learning in an AI-enabled environment.
- The takeaways are evident. Tell what students learn, what challenges the assignment addresses, or the insights gained from implementing it.
